TRANSEARCH ChildFund Foundation Invests Over K3 Million in Zambian Education Infrastructure
TRANSEARCH International is pleased to announce that the TRANSEARCH ChildFund Foundation has been formally recognised by Zambia’s Central Province Minister, Mr Mwabashike Nkulukusa, for its significant contribution to advancing free education through infrastructure development at Katete Primary School in Chibombo District.
Speaking at a nationally televised groundbreaking ceremony, attended by government officials and widely covered by national media, the Minister praised ChildFund Zambia and the TRANSEARCH ChildFund Foundation for injecting more than Three Million Kwacha into critical educational infrastructure.
Mr Nkulukusa reaffirmed the Zambian Government’s commitment to free education, noting that the policy was implemented despite political headwinds and has since attracted interest from across the continent.
‘We are receiving Members of Parliament and ministers from across the region who want to benchmark on our approach,’ he stated.
The Minister cited Katete Primary School, which has recently been upgraded to a Secondary School, as a compelling example of progress, where enrolment has grown from 500 to over 1,500 pupils – growth made possible in part through the Foundation’s long-term support.
Transformational Investment in Infrastructure and Sustainability
At the ceremony, ChildFund Zambia Country Director, Mr Victor Koyi, paid tribute to Mr and Mrs Ulrich Ackermann of the TRANSEARCH ChildFund Foundation for supporting the construction of a 1x3 classroom block and a 1x6 ablution block. The development will directly benefit 311 learners – 162 boys and 149 girls – and is expected to positively impact approximately 18,000 people across 25 surrounding villages.
This initiative forms part of the Ackermann 10-Year Improvement Plan, a sustained partnership between the TRANSEARCH ChildFund Foundation, ChildFund Zambia and the Zambian Government.
Previous developments at Katete Primary School have included:
- Construction of two classroom blocks
- Electrification of the school
- Installation of a water reticulation system
- Construction of four teachers’ houses
These initiatives have more than doubled enrolment, increasing learner numbers from 534 to 1,540, positioning the school as a model of educational progress in the region.
The latest phase of development will also include weatherproof boys’ and girls’ dormitories, semi-detached teachers’ houses and essential furnishings.
Building on Proven Success at Namununga
The Katete initiative builds on a proven model established at Namununga School, where the TRANSEARCH ChildFund Foundation has supported the construction of five classroom blocks, ten solar-powered teachers’ houses and a preschool, benefiting more than 15,800 people. Furthermore, a health clinic and a dormitory for the nurses have been provided for.
The Foundation has further strengthened long-term sustainability through income-generating initiatives, including hammer mills and a community shop, enabling communities to develop self-sustaining economic activity. In 2026 more than 1.600 learners are attending the Namununga school complex.
A Long-Term Commitment to Education
Mr Ulrich F. Ackermann, Founder of the TRANSEARCH ChildFund Foundation and Chairman of TRANSEARCH International, emphasised the transformative power of education and partnership.
‘To the teachers’ association and all parents, thank you for supporting your children, for sending them to school, and for giving them the freedom to unlock their full potential,’ he said.
‘Your efforts, combined with the Government’s commitment to free education, are making a real difference.’
Mr Ackermann also expressed his appreciation to ChildFund Zambia, a trusted partner of the Foundation since 2010.
